I’m a fan of weight-training However; I’m not a fan of the gym. The equipment is cold and looks prehistoric. As a space for social interaction, it’s a bit off-putting for those who aren’t familiar with the Language of the Meathead (see the Beefcake in his native environment as seen in the video below for amusing laughter: “I lift things up and then put the things in the back”).

I’m a big fan of sports with consequences. But I’m not a huge gym fan. The equipment made of steel looks cold and primitive. It’s a place for socializing, but it’s a bit off-putting for those who aren’t familiar with the Language of the Meathead (see the Beefcake in his natural habitat on this clip for fun laughter: “I lift things up and then put it in the back”).

I put aside my reservations last year, and with a group of friends (it helped to know that we were on the same boat as an athletic team), I walked into the weight room at the local gym and began lifting. Free weights and machines I played with them all until I discovered a routine that I liked. It was an absolute pleasure. In a matter of weeks, I was feeling stronger and toned. Being an athlete in the gym, I was able to feel like I was able to tap into this notion that it’s not about how strong your body is; it’s about rather how you believe you are.

It’s not difficult to feel confident when you’re supported. In my post-rowing experience, without the support of my team members to monitor my back (and my posture), I’ve found it challenging to enter the gym by myself.

That’s when I found the Ugi ball: my get-out-of-the-weight-room-free card. If you’ve ever been overwhelmed by the gym, This portable ball will help. Its vibrant hue (the ball is available in four different colours) is an original piece of equipment that shares space with your couch without being a visual irritant. However, don’t let the cuteness make you believe it’s a joke. The tiny beast can stand against any lateral pull-down device or bulky dumbbell and provide impressive results.

In our July issue, you may have noticed that we featured this cute variation of the traditional medicine ball back in July’s issue. It’s a 15-inch beanbag hybrid available in eight, six-, 10 and 12-pound sizes.

Since then, I’ve been working out using my Ugi ball at a minimum of three times per week for 30 minutes. If I’m watching some television at night, I’ll “lift it and then put the ball down” because it’s entertaining to not. I can tell how fast the Beefcake will develop that one-track mind.

The Ugi ball is a squishes-like stress ball so that you can stand, kneel or planks on it. Its creator Sara Shears, a personal trainer with over 15 years of experience, says she was looking to create one piece of equipment to provide the whole body strength and cardio exercise. “It’s the full gym you can get in the form of a tiny weighted ball”, claims the Vancouverite.

Perform a unique sequence of exercises lasting just one minute on the soft, uneven surface; it targets difficult-to-reach muscles that are difficult to reach. Shears has developed a sequence of exercises and poses that will keep you challenged. Her favourite posture she has created is “Round the Ugi”, a squat that travels. I love the poses that require me to throw the ball over the floor as shooting. It’s exciting to harness the primal power.

Shears has spent the past two years studying and creating her Ugi ball. It was essential for her to develop something that could combine strength, cardio and core strength, and she was aware that the process should begin with changing the way medicine balls are used. According to her website, the medicine ball was invented in the antiquated Persian wrestlers 3,000 years ago. They practised with primitively constructed sandbags that were cousins to the modern-day medicine ball. Shears liked the idea of the ball. However, he found its surface was too limiting for planks and other core-stabilizing movements.

Persian wrestlers would have been amazed by the Ugi ball because it can test whole muscle groups while keeping your heart rate at the right rate. Ugi ball Ugi hop is similar to the workout you can do with consequences for free that (unlike machines for weights) need the user to lift and hold the weight. However, this Ugi ball also provides flexibility that isn’t found in dumbbells. There’s a larger, safer movement range that stretches from my calves to my core and arms. Every muscle functions together, including my heart.

If your planks, squats, and squats seem a bit sluggish and uninspired, the Ugi ball could be the thing to get you started lifting your weights up and then putting them back down with the same enthusiasm as the man in the video.
